On Clothing
During the 10th to the 13th centuries, the common stitches for embroidery on clothing were split stitch, satin stitch and running stitch (Figure 5). Small metal plaques were sewn on to add interest (Figures 2-4, on the Materials page). Gold and silver thread was used in several ways. Single strands were couched down with thin silk thread, and multiple strands could also be also bundled or twisted together and couched down to produce a more three-dimentional effect.
